I Will Make of Thee a Great Nation: Old Testament Stories

 Learn how I wrote it and how it can help you understand the Old Testament!

*   *   *   *   *

This unique book contains 219 intriguing stories from the Old Testament, based on the Authorized (King James) Version of the Bible. They are written in clear modern English for Christian adults and young adults

The stories are told, as nearly as possible, in chronological sequence. The first story is about the Creation, as told in the book of Genesis. The last story, from the book of Nehemiah, tells of the trials and challenges faced by the Jews following their return from captivity. Some stories are very short; others are quite long. Some relate to only a small portion of one chapter of the Old Testament; while others cover entire books (like Deuteronomy, Job, Ruth, and Esther).

To make the book a more useful study aid, I have included a pronunciation guide and a chart showing the kings of both Judah and Israel from the division of Israel into two kingdoms (Israel in the north and Judah in the south). The chart shows when each king served in relation to other kings. It also shows where stories relating to each king are found in the Old Testament and which stories in this book relate to each king. I have also included copious footnotes, maps for geographical perspective, a name index, a subject index, and a short bibliography. And not only will this be a useful study aid for you, it will help you teach the Old Testament to your children.

Most of the stories use dialog to enhance their message―staying as close to the scriptural dialog as possible―but simplifing and shortening wherever appropriate. You will find that the scriptural message is clarified but without embellishing or fictionalizing. The whole idea is to be simple without being simplistic.

Every effort has been made to eliminate redundancy and cumbersome (and sometimes sordid) details. (You may, in fact, disagree with some of my omissions.) There are no morals, lessons, or conclusions drawn from the stories; they are simply left to speak for themselves.

While seeking to be faithful to the scriptural message, I have also attempted to use modern language and expressions rather than the cryptic language of the Seventeenth Century King James translators. For one thing, I have replaced the old-style pronouns (thee, thy, thou, and thine) with their modern equivalents when those pronouns relate to people. However, I have retained the old-style pronouns―and have capitalized them―when they relate to Deity. Along with these pronouns, I have also retained the old-style verbs (wilt, shalt, canst, dost, doest, goest, sayest, couldest, etc., etc.) that go with them.

The King James translators, in all but four cases, replaced the name Jehovah (JHVH) with "the LORD" (putting LORD in small capital letters, as you see here), I have put the name of Jehovah back into my stories. I think you will like the effect.

I have used footnotes (not endnotes) extensively. Though my notes are ususally not essential to the stories, they provide useful insight and salient background information to help you understand what is going on. Marny footnotes also cross-reference between related stories.

I Will Make of Thee a Great Nation does not pretend to be another translation of the Bible, and it is not intended to replace or upstage your scriptures in any way. Because this is a collection of Old Testament stories and nothing more, I was able to do something that modern translations of the Bible cannot to: I was able to omit a lot of difficult material that unintereting for most people. However, you will want to read each story along with that same story in the Old Testament itself. I believe this approach will help you understand the Bible better and bring it to life.

I hope, also, that you will gain a greater appreciation for, and a greater understanding of, God's love for His children―a love deeper and more abiding than we as mortals can begin to comprehend.

There is no other book like this one or that does what it does!
